Free Urban Chooks Class this Saturday March 15, starting 10:00 until 3:00
Where: Silverdale campus-295 Wainui Road at Betsy Kettles
This class for people who are currently keeping chooks or are thinking of keeping chooks in an organic, permaculture system in zone 1 or 2 (backyards or lifestyle blocks) If you are interested please email me back or call me. The class is limited to 15 and there will be enrolment forms to fill out on Sat morning. If you have been a Northtec student before please bring your student ID #, if you haven’t been a student please bring your passport or birth certificate verifying that you are a NZ citizen or resident.
Course Content
Why keep backyard chooks
Legal requirements-meeting local bylaws
What are chooks (weird, wacky pecking orders, light sensitive for egg hormones, toothless, socialable feathered dinosaurs)
Permaculture/Organic take on keeping chooks in a way that re-creates their natural environment –chook pen design, self-feeding systems
What chooks need to survive and what they want to be happy-healthier alternatives to pellets
Looking at the Kettle’s self-cleaning system
Naturally satisfying
Food, Water, grit
Company
Nesting boxes, broody boxes
“houses” Pens and fences
Protection from stoats, dogs, cats, hawks, pukekos
